International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day. In keeping with this, we've selected a few archive photographs of Shakespeare's most famous female characters.

Below left is a signed photograph of Alexandra Carlisle as Portia in The Merchant of Venice. This features the costume worn in the 1908 Beerbohm Tree production at His Majesty's Theatre, London. On the right is Lillie Langtry as Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra (1891).

On the bottom left, Ellen Terry plays the infamous Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's Macbeth (c. December 1888). On the right, Edith Wynne Mathison as Rosalind in As You Like It (c. 1900).
